Margaret "Peggy" A. Mandina and Sidney R. Mandina passed away on Sept. 14, 2016, and Oct. 9, 2016, respectively. They were happily married for 67 years and were always by each other's side. Even in death, they could not be kept apart for long.Peggy was born on Dec. 8, 1925, in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Dr. Earl M. and Margaret Smith. She graduated from Goucher College prior to meeting her love, Sidney. They married on Dec. 18, 1948. Peggy was an active homemaker and devoted mother. She raised two boys and often volunteered in their schools, with Cub Scouts, and with other extra-curricular activities. She loved to travel and enjoyed the beach. She dreamed of being by the ocean and designed their retirement home in St. Augustine Beach, Florida, where she and Sidney spent 26 years before moving to Greenspring Village in Virginia.She volunteered throughout her life: teaching children to read; working as a guide at Fort Matanzas, St. Augustine; and volunteering at the local library and police department. Her hobbies included travel, music, reading, and crossword puzzles.Sidney was born on Oct. 24, 1921, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to the late Joseph and Pauline Mandina. He attended and received an engineering degree from Louisiana State University. In 1942, he was called to active duty in the Army. He went on to become a B-25 pilot flying over 70 combat missions in the China Burma India (CBI) Theater earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross. He stayed in the service after World War II and transitioned to the United States Air Force. After retiring from the Air Force in 1963, he became a safety engineer working on the Apollo space program with NASA. He later went on to work as an engineer on the anti-ballistic missile system before finishing his career with the Department of the Navy as a safety engineer on ship design. Upon finally retiring, he enjoyed spending his time relaxing with Peggy, surf fishing, and playing golf.Peggy and Sidney Mandina, the devoted and loving couple, will be laid to rest, side by side, in Arlington National Cemetery.They are survived by their loving family: Michael Mandina and his wife Linda of Bradley Beach, New Jersey; and Matthew Mandina and his wife Terrie of Woodbridge; and four grandchildren: Christiana (Mandina) Angotto, Max Mandina, Lola Mandina, and Tony Mandina.
