GLEN J. (JOHN) METZ STOCKTON - Glen J. (John) Metz, formerly of Chadwick, IL died on Monday, April 28, 2014. He was born on Dec. 9, 1921 at home in rural Mt. Carroll to his parents Howard and Mina (Weidman) Metz. When he was 16 yrs. old he worked for Green Giant plant in Lanark and farmed with his father in Mt. Carroll. At age 20, they moved to Fair Haven where he continued to farm with his father. He married Lila Wenger at age 22 on April 8, 1944 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Clinton, IA. They farmed for many years in the Chadwick-Milledgeville area. In 1954, he bought the Chadwick farm on Stransky Road. They had two daughters, Judy Shilling and Susan Smith. He dairied until he was 55 yrs. old; he raised Shetland ponies; and also many Registered Quarter Horses. From 1978 to 1983, he also worked for the Ill. State Highway Dept. In 1983, he retired from farming. After Lila's death in 1985, he married Betty (Johnson) Shelly on Nov. 30, 1985 at Science Ridge Mennonite Church in Sterling, IL and moved to Dakota where he and Betty lived for 2 years before buying a farm in Stockton where they currently reside. Glen served on the Chadwick School Board for several terms, and was on several church councils and taught Sunday school. He especially enjoyed raising quarter horses, going on trail rides and playing cards with friends. Glen is survived by his wife, Betty; one sister, Ruby Doris Coleman, Rock Falls, IL; two daughters, Judy Shilling of Houston, TX and Susan (Dwight) Smith of Chadwick, IL; two grandsons, Doug (Abby) Smith of Ballwin, MO; Bill Bunnell of Dallas,TX; three stepdaughters, Gena (Robert) Fryer, Freeport, IL; Joyce Goeke, Raytown, MO; Carolyn (David) Zuck, Dakota, IL; one stepson, Steven Shelly, Freeport, IL; and 15 step grandchildren. He was a member of the Freeport Mennonite Church. Glen was preceded in death by his first wife, Lila; his parents; and 5 siblings, Carl Metz, Ada Rahn, Paul Metz, Ruth Downing, and Esther Kness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Freeport Mennonite church (3416 E. Brick School Rd. near Dakota). Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2 at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark. A memorial has been established in his memory to the Freeport Mennonite Church and the New Kingdom Trail riders, a non profit riding therapy program.
