Frederick Edward HawkinsJacksonFrederick Edward Hawkins, 77, a native of Jackson, Mississippi passed away Friday, April 14, 2017. Fred was born on January 6, 1940, to the late Edward W. Hawkins and the former Floy Elizabeth Beacham. He graduated from Murrah High School and attended Millsaps College in Jackson before receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1967.After graduating from USM, Fred worked in the Boeing space program in New Orleans. He later worked in sales and in law enforcement. Fred served for many years as a valued officer with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department Reserve Unit, where, among other duties he served as firearms instructor. Throughout his life, he was a firearms enthusiast and avid collector. Beginning in 2006 and for the remainder of his life, Fred protected and served the students, faculty and staff as a campus safety officer for Millsaps College. He was truly loved and appreciated by the Millsaps community.Fred loved music and was a passionate and talented musician. He played guitar and bass and provided vocals in a number of musical groups throughout his life. In high school he played guitar with his first band, Tink Coullet and the Co-Bops. Fred later played guitar with the renowned Tim Whitsett and the Imperial Show Band during the early '60s. While at USM, Fred met his lifelong friend Van B. Cook, with whom he played music for the remainder of his life. In the 1970s Fred formed a band with friends Skip Partridge, Bucky Barrett and Hadley Hawkins (no relation), playing regularly in Jackson to devoted fans. Most recently Fred played with his son John, brother Victor and friend David Womack in a band appropriately named Full Tilt Fred. Fred also loved spending time "picking and grinning" with his son John and grandson Jack.Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his brother John S. Hawkins, and is survived by his sister, Diane Hawkins Land of Stockbridge, GA; his two brothers, Marc W. Hawkins of Brandon, MS, and D. Victor Hawkins of Palm Springs, CA; his son, John F. Hawkins and John's wife Dorothy Allen Hawkins; his daughter, Ashley Hawkins and her husband Simeon Lipman of New York, NY; and his four grandsons: Jack Hawkins, Henry Hawkins, Miles Hawkins, all of Jackson, MS, and Maxwell Hawkins-Lipman of New York, NY. On Fred's behalf, the family gives special thanks to his team of extremely capable and compassionate physicians and nurses: Dr. Louis Puneky (oncologist), nurses Denise and Shalonda, Dr. Robert Allbright (radiation oncology), Dr. Jennifer Barr (orthopaedic oncology) and Dr. Will McCraney (orthopaedics). Fred greatly appreciated your excellent medical treatment and just as important, your caring bedside manner.Fred seemed larger than life. He had a great sense of humor, a big, loud voice and an even bigger heart. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.To honor his wishes, the family will hold a Memorial Celebration of Fred's life in lieu of a funeral service. The celebration will take place from 4 - 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Hal and Mal's restaurant in Jackson, where good music, food and drink will be enjoyed by family and friends, just as Fred would have it.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts and remembrances be made to Millsaps College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 1701 North State Street, Jackson, MS, 39210, or to the UMMC Cancer Institute Research Fund, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Office of Development, 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39216.Fred is pictured above with his beloved dog Pepper.
