Donald L. Luffel1927-2017DONALD L. LUFFEL (89), of Houston, passed away on January 24, 2017. He was born on October 4, 1927 to Katherine and John Luffel in Fort Scott, Kansas. Don was preceded in death by Beverly Ann Grubb, his wife of 65 years; and his brother George Luffel. He is survived by his sister Louise Claybourn Parsons, his three sons, Lawrence, Thomas and his wife Patricia, Robert and his wife Gerry; daughter Meredith Luffel Emmott; grandchildren Lauren Stillwaugh, Sarah Luffel, Katherine Luffel, Kyle Emmott, Brooke Emmott; and great grandchildren Daxton Stillwaugh and Kaya Stillwaugh. Donald Luffel served in the US Coast Guard during World War II. He completed his BS in Chemical Engineering at the University of Kansas in 1949 and worked 37 years at Humble Oil & Refining (later Exxon), followed by 18 years as a special consultant in reservoir engineering at ResTech, Inc. Among Don's significant contributions to the oil and gas industry were key enabling patents for processes critical to the analysis and recovery of shale oil and gas. A memorial service will be held at 10AM on February 21, 2017 at Memorial Oaks Funeral and Cemetery.
