Morrison, BarryA Memorial Service for Barry Morrison, 61, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 20 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Montgomery.Mr. Morrison passed away on July 2, 2017 in Tyler, TX following an extended illness. He was born on July 11, 1955 in Montgomery, AL. Mr. Morrison graduated from Jefferson Davis H.S. in Montgomery in 1973. He attended the University of Alabama earning a B.S. in Music Education in 1978 and East Texas State University earning a M. Ed. in Music Education in 1980. Mr. Morrison was a band director in AL and TX prior to his selection for the United States Military Academy Band (USMA), West Point, NY. He served more than 24 years in the Army prior to his retirement in 2012. Following his retirement from the Army, Mr. Morrison resided in Kilgore, TX.While in high school he participated in marching band and concert band. In college he was a member of the Million Dollar Band, Trombone Choirs and Symphonic Bands. During his tenure at West Point, in addition to his duties in the marching band and concert band, he participated in the West Point Tuba Ensemble and arranged much of the music repertoire for the ensemble. He also arranged several pieces for the West Point Concert Band as well as other organizations. Mr. Morrison was a frequent soloist with the USMA Band. He soloed with the U.S. Army Band, Washington D.C., Capitol Sounds, Montgomery and various other bands. In addition to his Army duties, he conducted the Rhinebeck Legion Band for more than 20 years; was solo euphonium in the Imperial Brass, Westfield, NJ; and was principal euphonium in the Hudson Valley Symphonic Band, Tarrytown, NY. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ralph and Avis Spurlock of Luverne, AL. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Jan Marz Morrison, of Kilgore, TX formerly of Montgomery, AL, three children, Stefanie Morrison Austin and husband Kenneth of Lewisport, KY, Christie Morrison Grimm and her husband Carl Grimm of Henderson, TX, and Jeffrey Morrison of Kilgore, TX, mother Lou Morrison Tatum of Tyler, TX formerly of Montgomery; brother Tony Morrison and wife Ranee of Denham Springs, LA; eight grandchildren, Haylee, Kyleigh, William and Jacob Grimm of Henderson, TX and Kenneth, Chloe, Carly and Keira Austin of Lewisport, KY; nieces Holley and Emelie Morrison; nephews Matthew and Alexander Morrison; and an aunt Tommie Pugh of Prattville, AL.If desired, memorials can be made to , the or blood donation to the American Red Cross.
