Reverend Dr. Albert H. Miller1926-2016The Reverend Dr. Albert H. Miller, age 89, left this life on November 7 at his home in Houston. He was born on December 18, 1926, to Albert H. and Edna (Theiss) Miller in La Grange, IL. Albert's parents instilled in him a lifelong spirit of compassion and inclusiveness, and a delight in serving others. As a child, he attended St. John's Lutheran School, where his father served as Principal, and under whose guidance he became a loyal Chicago White Sox fan. Albert was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, his first wife, Ruth Schelp Miller, and his oldest son, Dale Miller. He is survived by his wife, H. Lee (Mitschke) Miller, and his children, Douglas Miller, Susan and Frank Arhelger, Christine and Mark Hansen, and stepsons Stephen and Mark Varnado. He is also survived by grandchildren Ben (Alisha) Hansen, Renee (Jesse) Dolan, Mariel and Joel Arhelger, and great-grandchildren Dale and Wesley Hansen. A dedicated lifelong scholar, Albert graduated from Concordia Seminary in 1950 and earned a Master of Arts in Education from Wheaton College in 1954. He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1960, and both a Masters and a Doctor of Education from the University of British Columbia in 1968. Albert had a long and distinguished teaching career in a variety of academic settings, including Concordia College Edmonton, The University of British Columbia, Simon Frazer University in Vancouver, The University of Victoria B.C., The University of Houston, and Concordia University Texas in Austin. He also taught abroad at the American Embassy School of New Delhi, the American International School in Islamabad, the National Autonomous University in Mexico City, and Autonomous University of Guadalajara. After 29 years at The University of Houston, he volunteered in retirement as a professor at People of God Lutheran Seminary in Kazakhstan. Albert served in Lutheran parish ministry in Brookfield, Wisconsin, Vancouver, B.C., Houston, Port Isabel, Austin and San Marcos, Texas. In retirement, he served as volunteer pastor in Johannesburg, South Africa. Albert was a mediating voice in issues of religion and education, and he acted as a steadying influence in emotional situations by using a solid logical and theological approach. His relations with people in various contexts have been described as warm and loving, and he was well known for his cheerful attitude and unassuming demeanor. Albert was considered a gifted educator and a man of great pastoral sensitivity by his peers, colleagues, and all who knew him. In 1997, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity by Concordia Seminary for his special talents in glorifying God. "It was he (Christ) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up." Ephesians 4:11-12. Family will receive friends on Friday, November 11, 2016 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 800 Houston Avenue, Houston, Texas 77007.
