Walter M. Schlagel, age 95, of Hale passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011, at his home with his family by his side.Walter was born on Aug. 20, 1915, in Turner to Philip and Katherine (Schefer) Schlagel. He married Evelyn Badour in 1941 in Standish. Walter retired after 25 years from General Motors in Flint and farming in Turner. Later on, they bought a retirement home at Little Long Lake in Hale.Walter is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Evelyn; five children, David, Veronica (Bill) Hiveley, Marilyn (Fred) Williamson, Lorna and Linda (Larry) Daly; and one brother, Robert of Turner. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Molly Maser, Marie Zecman and Margaret Maser; and three brothers, John, Victor and George.A Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 407 S. Washington in Hale. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or St. Joseph Hospice of Tawas.
