This obituary is administered by:
MANIS, Stephanie B. Judge Stephanie B. Manis, beloved mother and friend, distinguished lawyer and Judge, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her adoring family on December 17th, 2016. Stephanie was born on January 8, 1940 in Denver, Colorado, to parents Col. Dudley Brody and Amelia (Marx) Brody. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with High Honors in History, and a Master in Education degree, from the University of Florida in 1967. She graduated from Emory Law School in 1977, after which she clerked for two years for Georgia Supreme Court Justice Harold Nelson Hill, Jr. Judge Manis served in the Office of the Georgia Attorney General for sixteen years, including service as Deputy Attorney General for the State of Georgia from 1988 until she assumed the bench as Judge of the Superior Court of Fulton County, Atlanta Judicial Circuit after her appointment by Governor Zell Miller on May 31, 1995. As a superior court judge, Stephanie Manis handled major criminal felony cases, civil litigation, and family/domestic relation cases. Judge Manis served as Editor-in-Chief of the Georgia State Bar Journal from 1993-1995. She also served as an instructor at Emory Law School, with the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. Stephanie inspired many as she was one of the first women to: earn a law degree while raising a family, join the Kiwanis Club and be elected to the State Bar of Georgia's Board of Governors. She managed it all with dignity and grace and her legacy will live on in the many lives she influenced. Prior to her death, Stephanie requested that her obituary note her strong opposition to the death penalty. Stephanie is survived by her husband of forty-nine years, Dr. Robert S. Manis, of Atlanta, Georgia; her daughters, Lisa Vayle (Eric), Tamara Perciful (Michael), and Valerie Egan (John), all of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Vayle, Callie and Hayden Perciful, and Sam Kravitz; and her sister Rosalie Pincus of Miami Beach, Florida. She is preceded in death by her sister, Shirley Teasdale, of Denver, Colorado. A memorial service will be held on January 6th at 1pm at The Temple on Peachtree with a reception immediately following.
