Robert F. "Bob" RodgersLAFAYETTE - The life of Robert Folmar Rodgers, 71, will be celebrated at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Lafayette. After a 17-year battle with Huntington's Disease, Bob passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 23, 2017 surrounded by his family.Reverend Andre' LaSana LC, a friend of the family, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass. Entombment will follow at Calvary Mausoleum.Bob was born on January 19, 1946 in Lafayette and was a lifelong resident of Lafayette. While attending USL, he met the love of his life and soulmate, Evalyn Adams. On July 18, they celebrated 47 years of marriage. Bob graduated in 1963 from Lafayette High, received his B.S. from USL and a MBA from LSU. While at LHS he and his lifelong friend, Ben Freeman, started the first LHS Golf Team. He excelled at golf (state junior champion) and basketball (All-state.) He attended USL on a golf scholarship and competed on teams that won the Gulf States Conference three years in a row and the NAIA National Championship two years. He was captain of the team and received All American honors both years. He was also a member and Pledge Trainer of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. In 1982 he was inducted into the USL Athletic Hall of Fame.He was an active member of the UL Alumni Association and "S" club. He helped form the Cajun Golf Association to raise money to support the golf program and assisted in organizing and serving as Chairman of the Heymann Foundation Tournament. He was a charter member of Lafayette Crime Stoppers, Secretary of Oakbourne Country Club Board of Directors, Vice-President of the Heymann Foundation. He was a past member of the Krewe of Bonaparte, Les Brigands de Lafitte, and the Krewe of Gabriel (served as Duke in 1988.) After employment as a National Bank Examiner with the Comptroller of the Currency, and Gulf National Bank (Gulfport, MS), he returned to Lafayette in 1977 to work for Herbert Heymann as Comptroller of Heymann Real Estate. He loved and had the utmost respect for Mr. Heymann. In 2005 he retired due to his illness.Bob was a kind, generous man with a gentle soul and humble spirit. He loved spending time with his family at the beach, taking his grandchildren to Disney, and playing golf with his lifelong friends. He was also a man of deep faith who trusted in God. During his journey with HD, Mother Angelica and the Catholic channel, EWTN, replaced the Golf Channel. In hopes of finding a cure for HD, he donated his brain to the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center.Bob is survived by his wife, Evalyn, his two daughters, Alison Rodgers Walmsley (Tim) of Savannah, GA and Kimberly Rodgers Hebert (Tom) of Lafayette; his siblings, Thomas A. Rodgers (Angie) of Fort Walton, FL and Janice Rodgers Bolivar (Bill) of Lafayette; his four grandchildren whom he dearly loved Avery Elizabeth Hebert, Adler Robert Walmsley, Gavin Edmand Walmsley, and Alexander Eads Hebert; his niece, Calen Rodgers Aultman (Claude), nephews Kyle Bolivar (Allison) and Barrett Bolivar (Polly).He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Hilda "Sweatpea" LeBlanc Rodgers and a nephew, Jason Rodgers.Pallbearers will be: Ben Freeman, Tom Hebert, Don McMath, Tom Rodgers, Buddy Short, Tommy Thomas, Michael Shea, and Tim Walmsley. Serving as gift bearers will be his grandchildren.A heartfelt appreciation is extended by the Rodgers family to the entire staff at Heart of Hospice and his compassionate caregivers, Becky Salassi, Franchesca Francis, and Agnes Kilchrist's staff with Loving Care. Also, two dear friends Sr. Laura Melancon and Donette Thomas, Eucharistic Ministers from St. Genevieve Church who visited him weekly for several years.The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN location on Friday from 4:00 PM -8:00 PM and on Saturday from 8:00AM until time of service.
