Richard James Simpson of East Tawas, formerly of Owosso, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, Aug. 11 under the loving care of his family and hospice, age 82 years. Richard was born on Jan. 24, 1931 in Lansing to James and Margaret (Dennis) Simpson. He proudly served our country during the Korean War in the United States Marine Corps and he was the brave recipient of the Purple Heart Award. Richard was self-employed as a sheet metal worker for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and all the beauty of the outdoors. Richard was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks, Eagles, Moose, Knights of Columbus, Holy Family Catholic Church in East Tawas and St. Paul's Catholic Church in Arcadia, Fla. Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Simpson, to whom he married on Sept. 9, 2001. Also surviving are his three loving children, Kathleen (Al) Root of Owosso, Annette "Toni" (Joe) Doyle of Owosso and Richard Jr. (Janet) Simpson of Owosso; two grandchildren, Richard Simpson and Kyle Root; one granddaughter-in-law, Lisa Root; two great grandchildren, Garrett and Nyah Root; and many dear friends. Richard was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Root; and his parents, James and Margaret Simpson. A funeral mass will be held today Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in East Tawas with Father Charles Donajkowski officiating. His family will welcome friends at the church for visitation on Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Military honors will take place at the church following the funeral mass.
