Griffin, Peter D.Dr. Peter D. Griffin of Westport, CT, died at his home on November 29, 2016. He was 58 years old. The cause of his death was cancer of the pancreas. He was born on July 7, 1958, in Cedar Rapids Iowa. He attended Rutgers University School of Engineering from 1976 through 1980 graduating with a Bachelor's of Science, Electrical Engineering, high honors, in May 1980. He was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering honor society as well as Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical engineering honor society. He attended Loyola Stritch School of Medicine from 1980 through 1984 where he graduated with a Medical Doctorate in 1984. He was accepted into Columbia University's combined Internal Medicine and Occupation Medicine program becoming board certified in both Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine in 1988 and 1991, respectively. He received a Master's in Public Health from Columbia University in 1991.He fulfilled a two year commitment to the National Public Health Service by working in a physician shortage area in upstate New York at Syracuse Community Health Center from 1987 to 1989. Here he earned the NPHS Regional Administrators award for his work on AIDS and Drug Addiction. It is in upstate New York where his interest in outdoor sports began. He moved back to the New York metropolitan area in 1989 to complete his Masters in Public Health from Columbia University's School of Public Health and his fellowship in Occupational Medicine graduating in 1991. He then began a carrier as a corporate medical consultant working as a medical director for a variety of large industrial companies including Allied Signal, Pitney Bowes, Koch Industries and Praxair. He volunteered as a board member to the Ridgefield Visiting Nurses Association, the American Cancer Society (Making Strides against Breast Cancer) and as a volunteer clinician to the AmeriCares Norwalk, CT free clinic.Dr. Griffin in survived by his father, Peter Craig Griffin, (his mother, Margaret having passed away in 1983), step mother Doris, brothers Alex, Tony and John; sisters Christine and Rachael; and step brother and sister, Douglas and Karen BeIl. In 2004 he married Phawana Chaorineua and together they had one child, Cole. Phawana and Peter lived their happiest years over the following decade, sailing their boat out of Westport to the many ports-of-call in the Long Island Sound and beyond. Peter enjoyed sailing, skiing, fly fishing, hunting, and photography. He finished his first New York Marathon in 2014. He was also a poet. His last published work, Love Land, contains his poetry and the portrait art of his dear friend, John Schlereth. The lives Peter touched and enriched are a testament to the strength of his character and the brightness of his life. You will be missed Pete, but you will always be with us.Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. directly in Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Avenue, Westport.
