Novelin Mae Wilkens HeffnerNovelin Mae Wilkens Heffner passed away on May 16, 2017. A private family graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017, at Forest Park West Cemetery. A memorial service is planned for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2017 in the Frost Chapel of First Baptist Church of Shreveport, with Reverend Ronney Joe Webb officiating. A reception in the Church parlor will follow the service. Novelin was born on February 20, 1925 in Port Arthur, Texas, where she later graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. She enjoyed working as a secretary for a variety of employers over the years, including Ruston City Judge Fred W. Jones, Jr. and the First Baptist Churches of Ruston and Shreveport. Novelin married Harry Miller Heffner, Jr. on June 5, 1946. Upon moving to Shreveport later in life, the couple joined the Shreveport Newcomer's Club and First Baptist Church of Shreveport. Harry and Novelin shared many interests, including camping, gardening, traveling, entertaining friends at home, dancing to big band music, spending time with their grandchildren, and playing card games. Novelin was an excellent seamstress and cook. Novelin was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, A.W. Wilkens and Mayomie Blanchard Wilkens, as well as siblings J.W. and Charles Wilkens and Florence Reeves. Novelin is survived by her children Brenda Heffner Murchison and Jesse Stuart Heffner; son-in-law Malcolm Murchison; grandchildren Marcia Murchison McCullough and husband Ramsay, John Murchison and wife Sarah, and Lauren Murchison; five great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews; and dear friend Frances Kurz.The Family wishes to thank the staff of Montclair Park Assisted Living and Live Oak Health Center for their support and care of Novelin during the past several years.Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Shreveport, 543 Ockley Dr., Shreveport, LA 71106.
