A Life Well Lived

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Milford (Mickey) Andrew Scragg Jr., who was born on October 19, 1963, and peacefully left his earthly life on July 19, 2025, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

He is survived by his loving children Josie (spouse Phillip Cooper) and Jasmine (spouse Anthony Kesterson), as well as his two beautiful granddaughters, Liliana and Ruby Kesterson. He also leaves behind two sisters, Lola Brinegar and Jane May, whom he loved dearly and was their protector. Milford was the son and last child born to Milford Andrew Scragg Sr. and Mirl Rose Vealey Scragg who preceded him in death along with his older brother, Bruce Hassell Scragg.

He was nicknamed “Mickey” early on and was raised in his first home built by his father in Marmet, WV. His favorite memories were of Christmas sneaking down the stairs to watch his older siblings argue while assembling toys, because they spoiled him. Mickey attended Marmet Elementary, Hamlin Jr. High and Scott High School before embarking on his career to support his family. Over the years, Mickey worked at Henson Harless Sawmill, Lowes, Southern Kitchen and the Charleston Civic Center. He made his home on his family farm in Morrisvale, West Virginia.

Mickey had a passion for reading books of all genres, especially murder/mystery novels, and listening to 70s and 80s music. His favorite artist was Nina Simone, and he found comfort in one of her quotes: “What kept me sane was knowing that things would change, and it was a question of keeping myself together until they did.”

Mickey spent his last two years at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Danville, West Virginia alongside his sister Jane May. The staff called them “two peas in a pod” as they spent every day together watching scary movies and eating Mickey’s favorite candy, Reese Cups. He never went without his flannel shirts and Gas Monkey Garage hat.

His sister, Lola would like to thank his special Niece and Nephews for helping care for her baby brother over the years. Whether it was taking care of his property, driving him to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, visitations, Christmas gifts and anything else he requested, they were there: Denise (Jeffrey) Miller, Allen (Angie) Harris, Dean (Shelley) Brinegar and Bruce (Beth) Meadows. He was know to them as their, “Uncle Mick.”

Little did Mickey know his Niece, Denise gifted his father his first bible in his 60s and this past Christmas she did him as well. He read it several times and loved discussing it with others. We are beyond thankful for all those that witnessed to him.

Mickey battled a long illness with grace and courage until the end. The family would like to thank his nurses Melissa, Sabrina and all the staff and doctors who provided him compassion and comfort till his last breath. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. We are at peace knowing he’s no longer in pain and he gave his heart to the Lord. Let us remember his funny stories, admiration of his daughters, grandchildren and celebrate his legacy for years to come.

Mickey’s wish was to be cremated with no funeral service. His ashes will be spread on his farm where he was most content.

We thank Freeman’s Funeral Home in Chapmanville, West Virginia for his arrangements and all those who have sent messages, prayers and food to the family of our beloved Mickey.
