Leroy H. Berry of Tawas City, formerly of Sterling Heights, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the age of 81 years in Saginaw at St. Mary's Hospital.Leroy was born on April 2, 1932 in Roseville, a son of George and Lydia (nee Wein) Berry. On Sept. 8, 1954, Roy married Shirley Gaugh of Menominee. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage. In 1989, Roy retired from Consumers Power Company of Macomb County. He and Shirley then moved to Tawas City where they have made their home for the past 24 years.Roy was a Korean War veteran, having served his country from 1952 to 1954. He was the recipient of a purple heart for injuries sustained while serving his country. Roy was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.Roy loved clocks, one of his favorite pastimes was buying garage sale clocks that needed repair and restoring them. He loved his home and yard and it showed by its beauty, both inside and out. A summer garden was his specialty, known for the size of his "crop." Roy spent many hours relaxing playing the organ, quite loudly at times, which the neighbors could hear all down the block! Roy was an avid fisherman, especially during salmon and whitefish seasons, and also taught his young grandsons the art of fishing. After retirement, Roy and Shirley enjoyed several years of camping and traveling, especially to Tennessee. In earlier years, Roy enjoyed deer hunting with his brothers, George and Bob, in Hastings. Roy touched many lives helping friends, neighbors, and family whenever he was able.He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley; son, Steven (Janet) Berry of Shelby Township; daughter, Susan Berry of Ann Arbor; grandsons, Christopher Olson of Chelsea, Marc Berry of Shelby Township and Eric Berry of Chicago, Ill.; aunt, Neva Blumberger of Clinton Township; sisters-in-law, Eleanor (late George) Berry and Roberta (late Robert) Berry; brother-in-law, Kenneth Gaugh of Menominee; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Roy will also be sadly missed by his pet cat, ""Patches.""Per his wishes, cremation arrangements have taken place by Northrop-Sassaman Funeral Directors of Northville. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20 at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. with a prayer service immediately following, with Pastor Jerry Wallace of the Nazarene Church of Tawas officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Tawas Area Honor Guard. Interment will be in Cadillac Memorial Gardens-East, Clinton Township.
