Lawrence "Larry" Martinez, 77, passed away on Feb. 22, 2015, at home in Douglas, Ariz., while recovering from a brief illness.Larry was born on Aug. 28, 1937, in Ocate to Antonina Martinez, and was raised in Wagon Mound. He was a member of the 1954 Wagon Mound Trojans basketball team that won the state championship. Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduating from Wagon Mound High School in 1955. He was honorably discharged in 1959, after serving as an MP at Thule Air Force Base in Greenland.Larry married Annie DeVargas on April 18, 1960. They started their family in Albuquerque, and then moved to Raton, before eventually settling in Las Vegas. Larry attended New Mexico Highlands University, worked at Seaboard Finance, and St. Anthony's Hospital Amistad Methadone Clinic before he and Annie purchased the Credit Bureau of Las Vegas in 1976 and the Addressing Service in 1978. After closing the businesses, Larry moved to Arizona in 1989. He lived in Sierra Vista before settling in Douglas. Larry is survived by four children, Richard (Debbie), Kathy Pierce (Steve), Loretta Silva (Dennis), and Anthony (Fritzie); six grandchildren, Joshua, Jason (Alicia), Jenelle (Diego), Kenny, Gabriel and Andrea; four great-grandchildren, Merayla, Enrique, Kaleb and Kayliana; sisters, Isabelle Martinez, Mary Alice Peralta, Nancy Cruz (Eldie), and Stella Martinez; aunt, Porfiria Ortiz; six godchildren, Arturo Martinez, Darlene Haverlock, Michael Peralta, Tina Duran, Debbie Pacheco, and Thad Middleton; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and grandfather, Bonifacio Martinez. The family would like to thank Mauricio Paiz, Virginia Monje, and the late Naomi Zebrowski and their families for being good friends to Larry after he moved to Arizona. Also, the family acknowledges and thanks Francisco Jaime for his care, compassion and friendship with Larry and for assistance provided to the family after Larry passed away.Larry was a lifelong Catholic, an avid golfer and loved to tell jokes. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Cremation has taken place, and Larry will be returning to New Mexico. Services will be held at Santa Clara Parish in Wagon Mound on Saturday beginning with a rosary at noon, followed by mass at 1 p.m. and interment at the parish cemetery. Larry's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.Arrangements were handled courteously and professionally by Alex Espinosa Funeral Homes of Bisbee, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the in Larry's honor.
