After high school, John was drafted into the United States Army and Honorably Served his country during WWII in a medical clinic in San Francisco, CA treating prisoners of war. Upon completion of his service, John attended St. Cloud State University for two years before transferring to the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL, graduating as a Doctor of Optometry in 1950. He began his first optometric practice in Elbow Lake in 1951 under the name Dr. J.B. Stock Optometry. In 1956, he moved to St. Cloud and continued his practice, located in the Lahr Building downtown. Later, he moved his offices to the Honer Complex in Waite Park, renaming his practice to Park Vision Clinic. He had a rich baritone voice, and loved to sing along with his wife and daughters on the piano. His favorite songs to sing were Ave Maria, Panis Angelicus and the Anniversary Waltz. John loved being in nature and, in his retirement, spending time at his son's land, doing projects in the shop.
