Sgt. John Lopez was born October 22, 1954, to the Union of Juan and Maria Lopez in Puerto Rico. John parents decided to move to Southport, Louisiana in 1962 where he excelled in his  studies .

John accepted Christ as his savior at a young age with Christ Baptist Church in Southport where he was a faithful servant and deacon.


In 1974 at the age of 20 with his parent's blessing, John decided to move to Chicago, Illinois to
join the United States Marines. John earned his college degree in Criminal Justice at University Chicago. John served in the marines until 1978 where he retired and moved to Gary, Indiana.

In 1979 John was sworn in as a Gary Police officer where he met the love of his life, Rebecca Edwards. John was employed with the Gary Police Department until he departed.
John and Rebecca became inseparable after 6 months of dating. John and Rebecca got married on November 21, 1980.

John was truly blessed he departed life on February 20, 2019. He is departed in death with his loving parents Maria and John, his son (John Jr.). Sister Law Jean and Uncle Rico.

John leaves to cherish his memories his wife Rebecca Lopez. Daughter Terracena Edwards
6 stepchildren Marla King, Lisa Daniels, Cherrie Daniels, Donald Jones, Maria Jones, and Richard Edwards. His 5 siblings Hector(Maria) Lopez, Jesus Lopez, Hernando (Silvia) Lopez, Marie Lopez, and Wayne Lopez. 3 grandchildren Anthony, Ryan, and Mariah. Gary Police Department and United States Marines. His beloved K-9 Roco. A host of sister-in-laws, brother in laws, nieces, cousins, and friends.
