Dr. Jimmie Young BuieLafayette - Dr Jimmie Young Buie, resident and active community member of Lafayette, died peacefully on Oct 16, 2017 surrounded by family and friends. Jimmie was born on Feb 12, 1929 in Franklin Parish, a native of Winnsboro, LA. She was the only child born to James Copeland Buie and Mabel Lydia Buie (nee Young). After many years following the death of his first wife JC Buie married his deceased brother's widow, Marie Brower Buie. From an early time Jimmie demonstrated keen interest in the arts and education. She obtained her BA from Louisiana Tech in 1952 and moved to Lafayette to teach art classes at U of L. Jimmie began creating ceramics, portraits, sculpture, and jewelry. She excelled in jewelry-making, including showcasing her jewelry in juried shows nationally, and publishing A Jewelry Retrospective: 1963 - 1984 via U of L Press, 1984, University Art Museum.Jimmie was encouraged by professors to seek her PhD and was admitted to Columbia University Teachers' College NY, NY for her doctoral studies. During this time in NY Jimmie saw early Broadway debuts and regularly attended ballet, film, and opera productions. She completed her Doctor of Education in 1959 and returned as professor of arts to U of L where she taught for 30 years. Her dissertation title: A Plan for Improving and Expanding the Art Program for Elementary Education Teachers at Southwestern Louisiana Institute. Jimmie retired as Professor of Applied Arts and Art Education.Jimmie was a world-traveler and historian, carefully chronicling her experiences in over 52 countries in 40 years. Her travels often included tours of museums and local culture, including attending theater, music, and dance productions.Jimmie was dedicated to local and national philanthropy, such as art education, Veterans' causes, and medical research. Jimmie is survived by several cousins throughout LA and the US.Family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at Cornerstone Village South in Lafayette for the love and kindness shown to Jimmie during her stay. Finally, a special debt of gratitude goes out to Ashley Johnston, Jimmie's beloved niece and caregiver, for her selfless devotion to Jimmie in her final days.Jimmie will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and spirit of adventure. Her memory will live on through her colorful story-telling and dry wit. She inspired all who knew her to thirst for knowledge and live life to the fullest.
