Henry L. Kelley Obituary

Oct 30, 1931 - Sep 18, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Henry L. "Jack" KelleyHenry L. "Jack" Kelley, much-loved husband, father, and grandfather, died on Monday, September 18, in the manner of his idol, Winston Churchill, "at peace and without pain." He was 85.Jack Kelley was born on October 30, 1931, in Macon, Georgia, and he carried a lifelong love of his home state, which he deemed "the promised land." He earned degrees from the University of Florida and the University of Georgia, and served in the Air Force before taking his first educational post in Moore Haven, Florida, teaching for one year before becoming the youngest school principal in state history. Public school administration would fulfill the rest of his career.Through his many years in education, he served in numerous capacities, but none meant more to him than the Community Credit Union. In 1958, when he'd first arrived in Brevard with nothing but an employment contract as collateral, the fledgling Credit Union loaned him $1,000 to purchase a house. Forever grateful and wanting to ensure others had similar opportunities, he served on their board of directors for 55 years, 33 of those as Chair. As a leader who governed with a deep sense of humanity, he inspired great loyalty in employees and friends alike. Everywhere he went in Brevard County, people were sure to greet "Mr. Kelley," and he was just as sure to remember their names. Jack married Brenda in 1982, acquiring three stepdaughters (and assorted dogs) for whom he always provided "three hots and a cot." He and Brenda enjoyed many years of dancing, dining, and travel, returning often to favorite spots like Fernandina Beach and his cherished Georgia mountains. Jack loved all things British, told a wicked Cajun joke and embodied the best of Southern gentility. Though his adventures were varied and many, he remained happiest enjoying time at home with family, friends, and a good martini.Jack belonged to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where he was remembered in a private ceremony in September. Jack was predeceased by son, Scott and brother, Gordon, and his survivors span four generations. He leaves behind sisters Polly Dahm and Patsy Griffin and their children. His beloved wife, Brenda, daughters Kendra (Allan), Mindy (Michael), and Cari (Kathy) will remember him always, and he brightened the lives of nine precious grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Remembrances can be made in his name to the Jack Kelley Scholarship Fund at the Brevard Schools Foundation, 2700 Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, FL 32940.He is deeply missed.
