Frances Eleanor Hohenstein - SAVANNAH - Frances Eleanor Hohenstein, 84, died peacefully on January 26, 2017 at Savannah Hospice House after a short illness. She was born on April 6, 1932 in Savannah, GA and lived in Savannah her entire life. She graduated from St. Vincent's Academy and spent her early career years in the shipping industry, working for Hohenstein Shipping Company from 1957 until 1974. At Hohenstein she worked in all areas of the business and rose to the position of Assistant Vice President of Operations. In later years she worked for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System at the Board of Education's administrative office, and she retired from the school system in 1994. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic faith. She is preceded in death by her parents, John B. Hohenstein and Marguerite Murken Hohenstein, and by her siblings, Dorothy Hohenstein Gentry, John B. Hohenstein, Jr, and Margaret Hohenstein Gill. Frances leaves her nieces and nephews to treasure her memories: John B. Hohenstein, III (Susie) and Joseph B. Hohenstein (Sharon) of Savannah, GA; Benjamin W. Gill, III (Paul Noga) of Germantown, MD; Patricia Tobe of Charlotte, NC; Debbie Halpin (Brad) and Michelle Jahn (Bill) of Jacksonville, Florida; and several great nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Julia Johnson and the many compassionate nurses and other caring staff and volunteers at Savannah Hospice House who helped Frances through her challenging final days with expert care and unparalleled compassion. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel with the funeral service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery. Remembrances may be sent in her name to the Blessed Sacrament Building Fund, Humane Society for Greater Savannah, Save-A-Life Animal Welfare, Senior Citizens, Inc., or Hospice Savannah.
