Florence Mae (Boyer) Heine of Tawas City was called home to Jesus on Sunday, Aug. 21 at McLaren Hospital in Flint, age 81 years.Florence was born on Jan. 23, 1935, in Flint, daughter of Austin and Sophie (Renkert) Boyer. She developed an early interest in music, and began serving as a church organist at the age of 14, which service to the Lord she would render for a further 63 years. After graduating from Flint Central High School in June of 1953, she worked at AC Spark Plug Division with her father, subsequently attending the University of Michigan (Flint) and earning a baccalaureate degree in education. Florence married Garwood L. Heine on Sept. 12, 1959 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Flint, and the couple subsequently settled in Glennie (Oscoda Township).Music, teaching and gardening were central to Florence's life. She was actively involved in the local 4-H organization, eventually becoming a master gardener. She was a paraprofessional music teacher, in various school districts in Iosco, Ogemaw and Arenac counties as well as the Lutheran schools. For many years, she was the "go to" organist at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Tawas City (as well as a member of the choir). She was a member of the Tawas Community Concert Band (playing the flute and percussion bells), and also served on its board of directors for a time.She was the statistician and record keeper for the Glennie Falcons Little League baseball team (while her sons were active members of that team). She was also active with the Iosco County Republicans, serving as an election inspector and precinct chair in Oscoda Township.Florence was recognized for her lifetime of service to the church in 2009, and retired as a church organist in June of 2012. She retired as a paraprofessional educator after the 2014-2015 academic year. In 2015, Florence moved to Tawas City, and focused on her work as a master gardener with the Sunrise Side Master Gardener Association, which work was always her favorite hobby.Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Beverly (Boyer) Randolph. She leaves behind her sons, Kurt (Linda), Kevin (Christie), Kristopher (Melissa) and Karl (Molly); daughters, Katherina VanSickle and Karin Rowlison (Greg); 20 grandchildren; at least 15 great grandchildren; and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.Visitation will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral service will take place at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Tawas City, with Pastor Larry Seafert officiating, on Sunday, Aug. 28, beginning at 2 p.m. Florence's family will receive guests at the church on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral.
