Born August August 9, 1912 in rural Louisiana, as a child Shaw frequently missed school to help her family pick cotton. She gave birth to 13 children including two who died at birth.   According to Shaw, she worked well into her sixties at whatever jobs she could get in places across the country from Louisiana to Las Vegas, Nevada, Palm Springs and San Bernardino.  Along the way Shaw helped raise six generations of church and community leaders.
