GRYCZEWSKIEdwardEdward Gryczewski, a Deacon, age 92, formerly of Point Place, died Saturday at the Episcopal Church Home in Rochester, NY. He had lived in Rochester since June 2015. Edward was born on Oct. 8, 1924, to Walter and Josephine Gryczewski. Throughout his life, Ed was devoted to his family, his church, his community and his country. A 1942 graduate of Macomber High School, Ed served in the US Navy in the Philippines during World War II. He married Helen Dzienny on Sept. 13, 1947. Ed worked at the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. for more than 30 years retiring as engineering manager. He was a member and former chaplain of the Toledo Telephone Pioneers of America.He was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish in Point Place for 60 years, during which he was involved in nearly every aspect of parish life. He was a member and past president of the Holy Name Society, was a member of Parish Council and St. Vincent de Paul Society. Ed taught religious education for 25 years, was on the CYO advisory board and coached boys' track and girls' softball at the parish. He helped organize the funeral luncheon program and he helped plan and set up the parish festival for many years. An avid golfer, Ed was one of the founders of the parish golf league more than 50 years ago. He also helped establish and staff the Bay View Retirees Golf Course.Ed was a Third Degree member of Knights of Columbus #4169. The council named him Man of the Year in 1967 and in 2010 named him Religious of the Year. He was past president of the Toledo Deanery Council of Catholic Men.In 1976 Ed was ordained to the permanent diaconate and continued to serve St. John's in that capacity until a few years ago. He officiated at countless weddings including those of his daughters. He gave baptismal instructions and baptized scores of babies including his own grandchildren, great-nieces and great-nephews. In 1987 Ed was appointed Diocesan Port Chaplain, ministering to seamen whose ships stopped at the Port of Toledo, taking the seamen shopping, to medical appointments and church services. He frequently gave them supply bags made and assembled by his wife, Helen. On at least one occasion he reported poor working conditions, which resulted in action by the US Coast Guard.Ed's other love was scouting. He served in leadership roles in Troop 136 including Scoutmaster, committee chairman and Ad Altare Dei instructor. Other scouting positions include executive board member and council member of the Toledo Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, chairman of retreats at Camp Miakonda and chairman of the Catholic Committee on Scouting. He received the St. George Award, Catholic scouting's highest honor.He was predeceased by his wife, Helen; daughter, Kathleen Ann Gryczewski; parents, Walter and Josephine Gryczewski; brother, Walter; sisters, Jessica Hoffer and Helen Dutkiewicz.He is survived by daughters, Marlene (Richard) Jensen and Karen (Norbert) Taylor; grandchildren, Christian (Brittany) Jensen, Eric Jensen, Natalie and Helena Taylor; and great-granddaughter, Ella Jensen; sisters, Lottie Kollins and Joan Polus; brother-in-law, Arnold (Ann) Dzienny; nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.Contributions in Edward's memory can be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.Visitation will be held on Friday, December 2, 2016, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 5153 N.
