Edward A. Baker, Jr. AGE: 99 • BearEdward A. Baker, Jr. of Bear, DE, in his 100th year, went to Heaven to rejoin his loving wife, Jennie. One of nine children, he was born on December 17, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY, to Edward and Ethel Baker. As a young man, he was proud to have been an usher at Radio City Music Hall, until serving in World War II as a medic aboard the Hospital Ship John J. Meany in the European theater. He made several perilous crossings of the Atlantic, serving in Italy, France, and North Africa. Upon his discharge from the Army, he joined the 50th Armored Division of the New Jersey National Guard in 1947, retiring with the rank of Captain in 1974. He was passionate about the health and safety of his fellow chemical workers. Prior to the creation of OSHA, he had already saved the vision and lives of many of his coworkers. He was the recipient of the NJ Governors Award for Safety and retired in 1987 as the Safety Director of ITT Avionics. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Jennie Papciak Baker, and five siblings: Miriam, Jack, Raymond, Joan and Ethel. He is survived by his sisters Rosemary Bennett, Mercedes Brennan, and Barbara Baker. He will be dearly missed by his children: Janet Baker Cicchetti (William); Beverly Baker Murphy (George); Patricia Baker Fiore (James); and Edward A. Baker, III (Leah), and by his Grandchildren: Kristine Tuttleman (David), Kenneth Koubek (Jessica), Jennine Hancock (Kenneth), George M. Murphy, III, Louie Matule, Eddie Matule; by his Great-Grandchildren: Jacob Matule, Reilly Matule, Mica Matule, Akira Hoke, Charles Edward Tuttleman, Elyse Tuttleman, and Chiara Koubek, as well as his many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Edward's life will be held at 11am on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, 2431 Frazer, Rd., Newark, DE. A private burial will follow.
