Dorothy Frances Hackborn, age 85, of Tawas City passed away Wednesday, June 15 at the Iosco County Medical Care Facility, surrounded by her loving children.Dorothy was born on July 20, 1925 to Albert and Freda Gettemeier in Florissant, Mo. She was employed as a secretary at Universal Match for several years before meeting her future husband, R. Gordon Hackborn, in 1946. They were married Aug. 14, 1948 in East Tawas, where they made their home for eight years prior to moving to Tawas City. Together, they celebrated 61 years of marriage.Dorothy was a secretary at St. Joseph Catholic Church (now Holy Family) in East Tawas for six years and also served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.She taught religious education classes in her parish and was an active member of the Council of Catholic Women, serving two years as president. She was parish representative to the Regional Council of Catholic Women for eight years, four years as treasurer.Her favorite activities included gardening, sewing, canning, crossword puzzles and entertaining her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She gave a warm welcome to everyone who came to her door and she always had a beautiful smile on her face.Dorothy is survived by her seven children, Linda Hicks of Tawas City, Cynthia (David Smith) of Tawas City, Robert (Holly) of Essexville, Gregory (Marcia) of Manhattan, Kansas, Elizabeth Barrow of Metairie, La., Mary (James) Staweke of Tawas City and Jane (Ziggy) of East Tawas; 13 grandchildren, Eric and Tara Schreiber, Jeff (Candace) Hackborn, Lauren Hackborn, Sara (Jeff) Andree, Neil and Christie Hackborn, Diana and Brandon Kuhn, Jonathan and Stephanie Tipton, Gregory Segrest and Megan Sykes; 17 great grandchildren with another expected in July; two sisters, Mildred (Richard) Naes of Florissant and Joanne Streicher of Arnold, Mo.; three brothers, Edward (Pat) Gettemeier of Ballwin, Mo., Bud (Sharon) Gettemeier of Florissant and Raymond (Jean) Gettemeier of O'Fallon, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, on June 7, 2010. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Rosemary; her brother, Robert; and her dear granddaughter, Kristen Hackborn.Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, June 20 at Holy Family Catholic Church by the Rev. Fr. Charles Donajkowski. Visitation with Rosary and spiritual liturgy was Sunday evening at the Tawas City chapel of Buresh Funeral Homes. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the and Holy Family Council of Catholic Women.
