Beloved Alfred E. Romero (Coach) was born on May 15, 1922. He died peacefully on April 18, 2016. He is preceded in death by mother, Valentina Romero. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 59 years, Pauline Romero; his daughters, Susan, Anita, and Mary (Lee), and his son, Alfred A. and his wife, Cassandra. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Judy Rogers, Angelica Maes (Vicente), Ann Branon and brothers-in-law; Adrian, Sammy (Pam), Bobby, Henry and Adolph (Arabelle) Clouthier, numerous nieces and nephews and special cousin, Albert Valdez.He was a World War II veteran. He taught and coached for the Wagon Mound Public Schools for 35 years. He was the region 8 basketball Coach of the Year in 1977 and 1983. He was inducted into the New Mexico High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 1991. He was the New Mexico High School Coach of the Year Class A in 1956 and 1974. During his coaching career he amassed a record of 508 wins and 258 losses. Coach Romero was a mentor to all the young men he coached and taught. He received the Highlands Cowboy Spirit Award in 2011.After retiring from education he served as mayor of Wagon Mound for eight years. He also served on the board for La Jicarita telephone cooperative. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus as well. Public service was his way of giving back to the village he loved, Wagon Mound.Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. today (Friday) at the Santa Clara Church in Wagon Mound. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday also at the Santa Clara Church with Father C. John Brasher as celebrant. Interment will take place at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Pallbearers are as follows: Gilbert Armijo, Samuel Lopez, Laudente (Shunie) Quintana, Richard Herrera, Donald LeFebre and Pete Fernandez.
