Dr. Wayne Stephen "Steve" Black SUMTER - Dr. Wayne Stephen "Steve" Black, 68, of Lexington, SC, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at his home. Dr. Black was born on February 18, 1948, in Columbia, SC. He attended Lexington High School, where he graduated top of his class. He then attended the University of South Carolina, finishing in three years. He continued his education at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, and graduated from the accelerated program in three years. He began his post-graduate training in Columbia at Richland Memorial Hospital. He then started his own private practice in 1974 in Lexington, SC, making him the youngest doctor in the county. He was the first doctor with an integrated waiting room in Lexington. Dr. Black dutifully served his patients for 42 years until his retirement in 2014. He was equally active in the medical field through different professional associations. He served as Director of Lexington County Mental Health. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the S.C. Medical Association, and the American Academy of Family Practitioners. He also served as a Medical Advisor for the American Heart Association, Chairman of Chart Reviews for the Lowman Home, Doctor on Call for American Red Cross Blood Drive and Charter Member of the Lexington Medical Society. Dr. Black was pivotal in helping start the Providence Family Practice in Lexington. Beyond the medical community, Dr. Black was also a former member of the Masons and the
Rotary Club. Steve was a very active member of Saint Matthews Lutheran Church in Lexington, SC, where he held the roles of Sunday School Teacher and Church Council Member, and taught Vacation Bible School over the years. He was also a Boy Scout Leader. As a youth, he played pony league baseball. He was predeceased by his parents, Seth and Vermelle Black. Steve is survived by his wife of 39 years, Kathy Powell Black; his daughter, Heather Widdowson (Heath), his son, Joshua S. Black, M.D., (Brandon Chinn), his grandchildren, Colin, Maddox, Fiona and Finn, and his brother, Tim Black (Ann). A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at Pilgrim Lutheran Church on Highway 6 in Lexington at 2:00 p.m. A visitation will be held immediately afterwards at the church.
