Vondel L. Lucas Obituary

Feb 16, 1919 - Jan 09, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Vondel L. Lucas Charleston - Vondel L. Lucas, 97, widow of Charles Edward Lucas, passed away November 9, 2016. The relatives and friends of Vondel L. Lucas are invited to attend her Funeral Service 11:00 AM Saturday, November 19, 2016 from the Graveside at White Church Cemetery, Hwy. 165, Ravenel. Online Condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Vondel Lacey Lucas was born on February 16, 1919, in Ravenel, SC, the only daughter of Janie Bivens Lacey and Pinckney W. Lacey. Growing up on her family farm, she helped pick cotton, milk cows and collect eggs, all the while attending school on her family's land. She would do her grammar school homework by the light of the kerosene lamp, as electricity had not yet come to Ravenel. She loved riding all of the farm animals, especially her favorite, Lottie the Mule. She grew up in a home with strong morals and great love. Her father valued education, ensuring his children received a college education. She graduated from St. Paul's High School and began attending Columbia College in Columbia, SC, in 1938. She helped with the war effort while in college by dancing with soldiers at the Columbia USO. After college she lived with girlfriends in an apartment in downtown Charleston, working for Cameron-Barkley in their accounting department. She married Charles Edward Lucas, Sr. in 1949. She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church for more than fifty years. Vondel will be remembered as a woman before her time, with a very independent spirit. She is survived by her only child, Charles Edward Lucas, Jr., and his wife, Karolea; her two granddaughters, Rachel Anne Lucas and Elizabeth Renee Lucas. She is also survived by one brother, Artie Lacey, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and brothers Carey and Jack Lacey. Her family is greatly indebted to her wonderful care nurses, Teresa Parish, whom she called friend, and Henrietta Roach, of All-Care Services. With their help and loving care, she was able to remain in her home of more than 50 years almost until the end of her life. Her family is also very thankful for Tara Sanders of Hair Bears, who faithfully came every two weeks to attend to her hair and nails. Vondel called those Saturdays her 'purtty-party' days. Her final few months were spent in the wonderful care of the owners, Graeme and Yassamin Marshall, and staff of Dayspring Johns Island, to whom her family is deeply indebted. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the or to the Building Fund at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 712 Wappoo Road, Charleston 29407. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, (843) 766-1365.
