Witchella, Sylvia Irene McGowanSylvia Irene McGowan Witchella, 90, of Oxford passed away on June 13, 2017. Sylvia was born on July 30, 1926 in Oxford, NY. Daughter of Hugh and Ida McGowan. She married her husband John J. Witchella on January 2, 1954. Sylvia was predeceased by her husband John 1989. She is also predeceased by her parents, her daughter Melinda, her sister Inath Hubbard and her brother Earl McGowan.Sylvia is survived by her childred Susan Witchella, John J. Witchella III, Marie and Todd Hall, and Hugh and Teresa Witchella. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jason Lowe, John J. Witchella IV and Ann Ward, Hugh Witchella and Caley Garhart, and Haley Witchella and Matt Warner. Also surviving Sylvia are her great grand children Jonathan and Tobias Lowe.Through out her life Sylvia worked at the WRC Home in Oxford as a secretary, at Camp LeJeune Naval Hospital as a secretary, and Witchella's Texaco Station. She also worked at Oxford Academy and Central Schools, and Norwich- Eaton Pharmaceuticals/ Proctor and Gamble. Sylvia also owned Ye Old Shanty in Oxford.Sylvia was a member of The Moose Club where she held many titles including Senior Regent. She was a member the the Fort Hill Post # 376 American Legion Auxiliary, The Ladies Fleet Reserve Association, and St. Joseph's RCC. She also enjoyed volunteering at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford.Sylvia was on 2 bowling leagues and enjoyed pitch, and shuffelboard. She loved cake decorating and gardening. Sylvia will be dearly missed by all of those who knew and loved her.In lieu of flowers donations in Sylvia's name can be made out to the Fort Hill Post # 376 American Legion Auxiliary. P. O. Friends and Family may call at the funeral home on Friday, June 16, 2017 from 2:00PM - 4:00 PM and from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Funeral Mass for Sylvia will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at St. Joseph's RCC in Oxford, NY at 10:30AM with Rev. Gerard Lupa officiating, burial in St. Joseph Cemetery will follow.
