He received his BS degree in Medicine from the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana in 1944 and his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Illinois- Chicago in 1947. While serving a medical internship at the Staten Island Marine Hospital in New York in 1948 he met his future wife, Dorothy Krakowka, who was serving an internship in Medical Dietetics. They were married on September 1, 1948, in Baltimore, MD. Sidney completed a 3-year residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic. Sidney proudly served as a medical officer in the U.S. Military for 27 years, including time as a flight surgeon in the Korean and Viet Nam wars and as a hospital commander. Among others, he served in Iceland, Germany and in the Pentagon. A highlight of his military career was serving as the Medical Officer for a world-wide fact finding mission led by Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield at the request of President John F. Kennedy in 1962. He retired from the Air Force in 1968 to practice in the private sector. Sidney had many passions in life including classical music, opera, theatre, and ballroom dancing. He enjoyed intellectual pursuits and was involved in the natural sciences, agriculture, economics, and financial markets. Sidney's family was clearly his great joy in life. In his devotion to his family, he manifested a life-long steadiness and reliability that will be remembered. A private memorial service was held on October 29, 2016, at Meadows Funeral Home followed by interment with military honors at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine where Sidney rejoined his dear wife.
