Dec 23, 1947 - Dec 10, 2016
This obituary is administered by:
Nancy VanSteenburghHyde Park - Nancy VanSteenburgh, 68, a lifelong Hyde Park resident, died after a valiant battle with lung and brain cancer on Saturday, December 10th, 2016 with her loving family by her side. Nancy was born on December 23rd, 1947 in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was the daughter of the late George & Jaqueline Montross. On September 11th, 1966, she married her husband, Joseph VanSteenburgh, who survives at home. Joe was at his wife's side at all times providing unconditional love, care and support.Nancy assisted her husband with the family business, JoVan & Sons Heating and Plumbing, taking care of the Secretarial and Accounting needs for over 40 years, in addition to working a full-time job at Conklin Instrument Corporation, as a Manager for over 25 years. My wife, our mother and friend, had a beautiful soul, full of compassion, love and courage. With the death of her son, she was strong, not because she wanted to be, but because she had to be. Her capacity was heightened to try to accept what is, despite the lack of understanding of why. She learned her strengths and dealt with fears she did not know existed. She has taught us to always honor, cherish and to take in every moment. To not get overly concerned with the petty stuff, to not judge or get caught up by the negativity and to always smile. She was a woman whose advice, wisdom and comfort were valued by many family members and friends. There is no way to be a perfect wife, mother, sister or friend, but there are millions of ways to be a good one, which she was.In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Tracey VanSteenburgh-Matarazzo, and husband, Damien, of Staatsburg; son, Joseph VanSteenburgh, and wife, Kathy, of Hyde Park. She has two sisters, Carole Montross of Albany, and Barbara Curran of Hyde Park. Her Goddaughter and best friend, Virginia (Ginny) Pendergast, and husband, Frank, of Hyde Park. Along with her parents, she was also predeceased by a son, John Joseph VanSteenburgh.Nancy is also survived by her four grandchildren to whom she absolutely adored, Alyssa & Giana of Staatsburg, and Kyle & Emma of Hyde Park. She loved and enjoyed spending time with them. She made sure she was at all of their sporting and school events, shopping with them for school supplies, making sure she had their favorite foods in the house, going to lunch or dinner, getting their nails done, those "special" shopping trips, and those times where they stayed at home talking and watching movies. She cherished the moments that she could sit with them and wait for the bus and was thrilled when they arrived back to greet her and then as they grew older, settled for the wave out of the window. She will forever be in their hearts. Nancy also has two great-grandchildren.Cremation has taken place. Memorial calling hours will be from 5 to 8 pm, Wednesday, December 14th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. Burial services will be at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, Nancy's family respectfully requests memorial donations to Abilities First, Inc., 70 Overocker Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603, designated to the Social Work Department.
