MATTIE SHIPPYSHELBY-Mattie Joyce Woods Shippy, 61, of 605 Oakley St., Shelby, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, at Wendover Hospice in Shelby. She was born on Dec. 18, 1954, in Cleveland County, N.C., to the late Lola Boyce Woods and the late Erdis Shy.Mattie was a graduate of Shelby High School. She was a loving mother figure, sister and an exceptional friend. Mattie was the backbone of her family. She never became discouraged and would always make a way out of no way. She enjoyed socializing, listening to music and last but not least shopping. Mattie brought much drive and compassion to everyone she had an encounter with, which ensures that she will always hold a special place in our hearts.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Walter Lee Woods; a sister, Mary Ann Woods and a niece whom she reared, Mary E. "Libby" Woods.She leaves to cherish her memory, two brothers, James Lee Woods and Jerry Wayne Boyce (Brenda) both of Shelby; two nephews, Robert Woods of Shelby whom she reared and Jerry Boyce, Jr. (Renee) of Charlotte; two great-nieces, Cherita Woods of Shelby and Whitney Woods of Rutherford County; two great-nephews, Jerry Boyce, III and Chancellor Boyce both of Charlotte; special friends, Janice Surratt and Anthony Jefferies both of Shelby and a host of cousins and friends.The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1 p.m., on Wednesday, and at other times at the home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel, officiated by Pastor Robert Coleman. Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery.
