Linwood E. Butler, Sr. went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Service will be at Oakland Baptist Church in Rock Hill, S.C. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 2:30 pm in the sanctuary with Pastor Nicholas Moss officiating along with Rev. Sheldon Timmerman and Pastor Mitchell Adkins. Visitation will also be July 9, 2016 in the church gymnasium from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private. Linwood was born on January 10, 1928 in Pitt County, N.C. in the small town of Bethel. He was raised in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School where he met the love of his life, Jean Marie Haynie. They were married in 1947. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a WWII veteran. He attended Furman University and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1951. He joined E.L. Long Motor Lines in 1951 and stayed in the trucking business as Terminal Manager until 1962. He moved his family to Rock Hill S.C. in 1952 and was a member of Oakland Baptist Church from 1952 until his death. He was co-owner of Mister Softee Ice Cream Co. in Gastonia and Charlotte N.C, from 1962-1964. He joined Celanese Corp. in 1964 and retired as Product Manager of the Technical Fiber Group in 1990. Linwood was a life member of Masonic Lodge #111, life member of York Rite Masonic Bodies, life member of Hejaz Shrine Temple, Life member of Crescent Shrine Club, member of Rock Hill Elks Lodge #1318, member of American Legion Frank Roach Post #34, past member of American Legion Drum and Bugle Corp, past member of Rock Hill Jaycees and past member of Hejaz Shrine Scooter Unit. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean Haynie Butler, in 1995 (married 48 years) and his parents, William Heber Butler and Ida Virginia Davenport Butler of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Also by his four brothers: George W. Butler, William Heber Butler, Jr., Herbert M. Butler and Harvey Lee Butler, his three sisters: Mattie Rae B. Goode, Pauline B. Gibson and Novella B. Baird and great grandson, Terry William Montgomery. Also preceding him in death are his beloved sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews; both Butler and Haynie. He is survived by his son, Linwood (Linny) E. Butler Jr. (Mary) of York, S.C. and his daughter, Shannon B. Williams (Terry) of Rock Hill, S.C., three grandchildren: D. Marc Brewer (Sandra) of Simpsonville, S.C., Brantlee B. Correll (Curtis) of Rock Hill, S.C. and Suzanne B. Moss (Nicholas) of Wilmington, N.C., his grandchildren by marriage: Angela W. Montgomery (Christopher) of York, S.C., Terry Gilbert Williams, Jr. (Holly) of Rock Hill, S.C., Harrison Miller (Amanda) of Columbia, S.C. and Elizabeth Miller of Los Angeles, California. Also surviving are nine great-granddaughters: Neely Robinson, Hannah Robinson, Bayleigh Moss, Gracie Moss, Macey Correll, Abbey Jean Correll, Cooper Marie Moss, Mary Butler Brewer and Virginia Brewer and three great-grandsons: Graham Robinson, Hoss Montgomery and Finn Miller; many nieces and nephews and his beloved sister-in-law, Ruby H. Carver. A special thank you to his caregivers: Jo and Crystal from Medi Home Hospice and the entire staff at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, S.C.
