1922-2017 The Reverend James Arthur Wray, 94, passed away January 23, 2017, at the Grace Care Center of Katy, Texas, where he resided for the last 19 months of his life. Prior to that, his home was at Calder Woods of Beaumont, Texas. James was born on November 27, 1922 in Houston, Texas to Henry and Emma Wray. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1939 and began studies at Howard Payne University before earning his B.A. from Baylor University in 1943. Continuing to his studies in preparation for ministry, he received his Master of Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1946. He served as pastor of Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Houston from 1945 until 1952 and B.H. Carroll Memorial in Fort Worth from 1952 until 1953. He was the Director of Baptist Students at Stephen F. Austin (1953-1957) then moved to Beaumont, Texas, where he was Director of the Baptist Student Union and Bible Department Chairman from 1957 until he retired in 1983. Following his retirement, he taught for 10 years at the Minnie Rogers Juvenile Justice Center in Jefferson County. James lived a long, full, and happy life as he served alongside his wife, Alice, teaching, counseling, and ministering to countless college students. He never met a stranger, and he loved and accepted people from all walks of life. Always kind and thoughtful, with a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye, he blessed others even through his final days on earth. James was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Emma; his loving wife of 50 years, Alice Reese Wray; and their first-born daughter, Susan Alice Wray. He is survived by his sister, Beverly Morrison of Tyler, Texas, as well as his two daughters and their spouses: Melanie and Jeff Cameron of Katy, Texas, and Amy and Roger Daniel of Sedona, Arizona. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Jenny Sullivan of Katy, Texas; Dr. Susan Frenzel and her husband, David, of Bellaire, Texas; David Cameron and his wife, Devon, of College Station, Texas; Dr. Leah Rider and spouse, Mark, of Aurora, Colorado; and Emily Daniel of Oak Park, Illinois. James had the joy of being the great-grandfather to 10 great-grandchildren; Rylie and Katelyn Sullivan; Charles, Samuel and Andrew Frenzel; Caleb and Benjamin Cameron; Ruby and Violet Rider; and Laylah Daniel. The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the caregivers, nurses, doctors, and staff at the Grace Care Center and Grace Hospice of Katy, Texas, for their attentive, loving care. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Calder Baptist Church, 1005 N. 11th, Beaumont, Texas. Visitation will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chancel Choir Lamar Student Scholarship Program of Calder Baptist Church.
