Henry Barnes AmesSalisbury-Henry Barnes Ames, 92, of Salisbury, passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2016 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center.He was born on September 10, 1924 at Kings Creek and was the son of the late Charles Bruce Ames, Sr. and Helen Barnes Ames. He is predeceased by brothers, Charles Bruce Ames, Jr. and Robert King Ames and sister, Mary Louise Ames Smith.He is survived by nephew, Gregory Thomas French and wife Stephanie and daughter Juliette; grandnephew, Eric French, grandniece, Judey French Yudkin; niece, Linda Ames Rogers and grandniece, Brittney Rogers Staicu.On July 5, 1939 at age 14, Henry was selected to be a guest hobbyist on Dave Elman's Hobby Lobby, broadcast nationally on the Blue Network of National Broadcasting Company. On November 29, 1941 at age 17, he was invited to make a second appearance on Hobby Lobby, broadcast on the Columbia Broadcasting System.Henry graduated from Washington High School in Princess Anne, Class of 1941. After attending Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware for one semester, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943. He served for four years in World War II, Occupation Austria and very beginning of the Cold War. Henry achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant serving as an air operations specialist in Italy and Austria. In 1946, he was awarded one of the earliest Army Commendation Medals by General Mark Clark, Commanding General, US Forces Austria.In 1948, he began a 31 ½ year career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Washington, D.C. and Rockville, Maryland, as a supervisory geodetic technician.His passion was world travel. He recorded a million miles of travel in Canada, United States, Mexico, Central America, South America, Caribbean, Europe, Africa and Asia and became a lifetime member of the Shillelaghs Air Travel Club, pioneering travel club authorize to operate an airliner.During thirty-six years of retirement he cared for any neighbor stray cats, ducks and geese with deformities or injuries.All services will be private.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Delmarva Cat Connection, P.O.
