Florence R. Munter, 88Berlin - Florence R. Munter, 88 passed away peacefully on Friday, November 25th, 2016 at her home in Berlin after a long affliction from Alzheimer's Disease. She was the widow of Mr. Andrew A. Munter, to whom she was married for over 61 years. She is survived by her three children & their spouses, Florence Munter & David R. Dahl of Denver, CO, Andrew H. Munter &Theresa Callahan of Kennett Square, PA; and Edward M. Munter & Melissa Barlow of Berlin. Florence leaves four grandchildren, Lt. Cmdr. David M. Schaller, currently serving aboard the USS Carney deployed in the Mediterranean & his wife Lindsey; D. Isabel Munter of Berlin, Michael Munter of Philadelphia, PA; and Jason Munter and his fiancée, Amanda Pulaski of Springfield, PA. She also leaves close nephew Robert W, Munter, his wife Beth and their four children; and niece Sarah Costa & family, children of the late Robert W. Munter.Florence was born on August 28th, 1928, in Winthrop, the only child to the late Arthur W. Rowe & Isabel (Crooks) Rowe. She was raised during the Great Depression by her mother & grandmother, M. Lillian Crooks of Hopkinton. Our grandmother, Isabel C. Rowe, an exemplary school teacher & principal in her own right, was the catalyst for our mother's interest in teaching children & helping others. Florence & her mother participated annually at the Fleur de Lis Camp for girls located in Fitzwilliam, NH, where young women were able to learn to be independent in many of the ways now taken for granted in today's society. Florence earned medals in both archery & sharpshooting along with horseback riding, canoeing & many other outdoor activities. She established lifelong friendships with many of her fellow classmates that remained for decades by attending alumni luncheons at the camp. Between Florence & Isabel, their combined dedication to the Fleur de Lis organization spans beyond 50 years.Florence graduated from Clinton High School, class of 1946, where she met her future husband Andrew. She attended Fitchburg State College where she earned her BS in Education with honors. Florence held many kindergarten teaching positions, both private & public within various elementary school systems in the surrounding areas of Lancaster & Northborough townships. Our mother's selfless dedication to provide individual attention to each early-learning child in her classroom, often beyond the standard work day, still resonates with former students who know of her kindness & teaching ability in the communities in which she served. Our mother volunteered countless hours to be active within her community, never expecting any recognition in return. She was a Sunday school teacher at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 10 year volunteer for the Unicef Fund, Cancer Society, and on the board for the development of the Berlin Northbrook Retirement Community. Florence's many interests included gardening, arborist, regional ornithology, cooking, baking & a lifelong commitment to research our family's genealogical history. She will best be remembered for her humor, bright smile, apple pies, refrigerator and Christmas cookies, infinite patience with any puzzle, card or board games played during rainy days on the Cape, as well as always being accessible to give clarity to a host of life lessons when needed. Florence was a life member of this country's greatest generation, who embodied the words respect, honesty & integrity. She was always willing to help others when they needed it the most. Education was the ways & means to insure that future generations would have the aptitude to make the right decisions in life. We can only hope to live up to her high expectations. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 10:30AM at the First Parish Church of Berlin, 24 Central Street, with her ashes placed next to our father at the North Cemetery, Highland Street, in Berlin. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory with either the or with Friends of Fleur de Lis. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton. www.philbincomeaufh.com
