MAGNOLIA - Dorothy Attix Meyer (Woods) died peacefully on Nov. 1, 2016. She was born on July 10, 1920 to Mildred and Frank Attix, Jr. on the family farm near Kenton. She attended school in the Smyrna School District, starting out in a one room school house in Downs Chapel and graduated from John Bassett Moore High School in 1938. She received her Bachelor's degree from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College, in 1942. She had a long career as a school librarian and a high school English teacher in Lewes and in the Smyrna School District. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Lester F. (Duffy) Meyer. They met and married while he was serving in the Army, stationed at Fort Miles in Lewes in 1944. After his service they settled in Smyrna and had two sons, Mark Francis born in 1948 and Dwight Stuart born in 1951. Her son Mark died in 1994. After Duffy's death in 1998, she moved to Magnolia where she lived and enjoyed life near her son Dwight and his family. In 2000, she married Jack Woods, a long-time City of Dover Manager of Public Works. He died in 2002. Dorothy is survived by her son, Dwight and his wife Janet of Magnolia; their daughters, Kimberly Holston and Kristin Brown and her husband Rob; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Emma and Matthew Holston and Luke and Noah Brown. Also left to cherish her memory are her niece, Gail Chupein; and her daughters, Julie and Lisa; niece, Carol Walsh; and a large extended family of cousins to whom she was devoted. Also grieving her loss is her special nanny/caregiver, Angie Stevens. Dorothy was a faithful lifelong member of Asbury Methodist Church where she taught an adult Sunday School class for over 35 years. Services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8th at 11:00 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call an hour before the service. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Compass Regional Hospice, 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, Maryland 21617.
