Colin Heathcote Brown Johns Island - Captain Brown was the CEO of Lucas and Brown, the last Marine Surveyors in Charleston's historic Surveyor's District. In a 2009 proclamation, then Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr said that he "contributed significantly to the maritime history and future of the City of Charleston" as a "consummate professional" and "pillar of the Charleston Maritime community." As an expert in marine transportation, he worked with steamship lines and maritime attorneys. He inspected ships and cargo as the Lloyd's Agent for South Carolina and North Carolina. His favorite aspect of his job was as de facto ambassador to the captain and crew of visiting ships. Colin Heathcote Brown was born on October 5, 1933 in Wallasey, near Liverpool, England. He joined the British Merchant Navy when he was only 16, sailing to the four corners of the Earth before 1950. He rose through the ranks with Liverpool-based Lamport and Holt, earning his unlimited Master's license in 1959. He sailed Cunard passenger ships before he joined United Fruit and sailed banana boats into Charleston. When it was time to come ashore and focus on the family, he knew he wanted to move to Charleston. Before settling in Charleston, Captain Brown acted as Terminal Manager at Port Royal near Beaufort, and as a stevedore supervisor for a Savannah-based shipping agency. Captain Brown was instrumental in starting Charleston's youth soccer program. He coached James Island youth soccer in the 1970s and '80s. Throughout his life he was an ardent fan of the British Premiere League team, Everton, and celebrated their miraculous tie with Manchester City on Saturday morning. Captain Brown leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 53 years Barbara, his daughter Dr. Sally Lanford, his sons Andrew Michael and Jonathan Heathcote, their wives Nyoman Jatiluih and Christa, his five grandchildren, and his brother Dr. Michael Brown. Memorial Service to be held at 2pm on Saturday, October 29th at Circular Congregational Church in Charleston, SC. Captain Brown's Guestbook may be signed at www.CharlestonFunerals.com.
