Smith, Carlton R.Carlton R. Smith of Trumansburg passed away at Cayuga Medical Center with family by his side on Monday, February 6, 2017 at the age of 90. Carlton was born on November 28, 1926 in Ithaca, a son of the late Minor and Lucelia (Willis) Smith. A lifelong Trumansburg resident, he graduated from Trumansburg High School. He quickly stepped up and became the man in his family when his father passed away during his senior year of high school. Carlton's mother was unable to attend his graduation because of the birth of his sister, Karen. Several years later, Carlton's mother married Ellsworth Weatherby, introducing him to several stepsiblings, Alan (Barb) Weatherby, Richard (Joanna) Weatherby, Ann Ida (Bob) Raymond, and Diane (Roger) Sherman. Out of high school, Carlton became a plumbing apprentice with Jamison McKinney and then did residential construction, including his own house, with his uncle Francis Willis. Carlton began his long term career for Haverstick Company and retired in 1991 after 34 years of service as a purchasing agent and office manager. He was a wonderful father taking part in his kids school and extracurricular activities. He and his wife, Arlene enjoyed traveling from coast to coast of the United States and took trips to Canada, Nova Scotia, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. He was a life member of the Ithaca Radio Control Society and was an avid builder of radio control planes. Carlton enjoyed spending time with children and was a member of the Cornell Retiree Volunteering in Schools Program. He volunteered taking kindergarteners on nature walks and made pine cone birdfeeders with the kids. First Baptist Church in Trumansburg has always been a prominent part of Carlton's life, starting when he was 4. He attended church with his grandfather Charlie Smith and has attended First Baptist ever since. Carlton, along with other church members were instrumental in the construction of the new church located on Seneca Road. He helped with everything from plumbing to wiring and used his personal account for lighting and wiring purchases. In later years, he and his wife saw the need for cool air flow in the sanctuary and donated the funds to purchase ceiling fans. Over the years, Carlton served on the Board of Trustees numerous times. Carlton is survived by a daughter, Deborah (Erik) Whitney of Ithaca; a son, Minor (Heidi) Smith of Newport, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Joshua Griffin, Rachel (Chris) Miller, Grace and Luke Smith, Robert, Gabrielle and Erika Whitney; sister, Karen (Ron) Premo; two great grandchildren, Kamden and Kelcie Miller and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Carlton was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Smith in 2006. The family will be present to receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00pm on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Trumansburg, 4443 Seneca Road, Trumansburg, NY. Funeral Services will immediately follow at 4:00pm at the church. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Spring.
