Yvonne Ann Hepworth Chatburn Obituary

May 29, 1918 - Jan 12, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Yvonne Ann Hepworth Chatburn May 29, 1918 - November 12, 2016A woman of courage, acceptance, patience, generosity, and love. Yvonne, 98, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away at home in Cheney on Saturday, November 12, 2016 with loving family in attendance.Yvonne was born on May 29, 1918 to Mabel and Charles Hepworth. The Hepworth family moved to Albion, ID in 1928 to join the family butcher shop business. Yvonne was 14 when her mother died so Yvonne and her dad raised her four younger brothers. Yvonne graduated from Albion Normal School and taught one year in American Falls. She had a class of 35, mostly boys and low readers. A challenge she took on with a firm, loving hand. (Good thing she had experience raising her four younger brothers!) She was married to Joe Chatburn the following summer, June 5, 1939. Yvonne and Joe moved to Boise where they grew their family, four children, and their houses- Joe building two of their homes. They enjoyed being near the Hepworth and Chatburn families, raising the little cousins together, enjoying picnics, and celebrations. 1957 they moved to Pullman, WA. Yvonne began her college library career while supporting Joe in getting his doctoral degree in Education. 1959 The family moved to Cheney, WA. Yvonne took a part-time job in the Cheney College of Education Library when Joe was hired for an administrative job. Yvonne cheerfully helped students find materials for which they were searching, in fact students would request her if someone else was at the desk.Yvonne and Joe built a new house in 1965 "up on the hill" and moved in after 3 years of vigorous labor. Yvonne didn't want to move in until it was really finished – but it was actually pretty close. Joe and Yvonne enjoyed hosting UCC church groups, college friends, neighbors, family, visiting relatives, PEO sisters, and Hawaiian students as EWU club supervisors. Yvonne was a gracious hostess and with any luck guests heard her "Hepworth chuckle."The next twenty years they were busy supporting their children's activities. Camping at Lake Slocan, BC was a favorite yearly family gathering, Yvonne always a good sport even at age 97.Then in 1966 the joy of grandchildren entered Yvonne's life. Linda was to spend a lot of time at grandma's house, followed by Sadie, Christopher, Gabe, Portia, Jon, Darlea, and Charlie, step grandchildren Cindy, and Jodi. Being present at the births or soon after, Yvonne was a devoted helper as well as a wonderful model for loving those little ones with lots of kisses and hugs. She has 3 great grandchildren, Juliet, Violet, and Samson, and 4 step great grandchildren Shelby, Cole, Bailey, and Zoe whom she adores. The family would like to thank our wonderful caregiving staff who gently attended her and Horizon Hospice of Spokane for their guidance and support. The love and care of neighbors and friends was dearly appreciated. Yvonne and Joe celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary prior to Joe's death in 2007. They are lovingly remembered and appreciated by their children; Peggy O'Connor (Federal Way), Ron Chatburn & Lin McGinn (Spokane), Patricia & Richard Conant (Federal Way) and Alonna Chatburn & Gordon Sherling (Marysville), their 10 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cheney Historical Museum or EWU Scholarship Foundation, Graduate Fellowship, 127 Hargraves Hall, Cheney WA.Funeral and burial will be held at the Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise, ID on Saturday, November 16 at 11:00 am. Yvonne will be laid to rest beside her sweetheart, Joe, and her first baby, JoAnn (deceased in 1940). A memorial service will be held in Cheney on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the United Church of Christ. Family and friends are invited to attend.
