William Norman, of Glastonbury, Connecticut, passed away on April 4, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on January 10, 1941, in Petersburg, Virginia, James lived a full and vibrant life marked by hard work, deep family connections, and an enduring zest for life.
Known affectionately as “Big Jim,” James was a gregarious and fun-loving man who brought energy and warmth wherever he went. He had a passion for life that was matched only by his devotion to family. In the mid to late 1960s, James met the late Cheryl Murray (June 1, 1944 – November 25, 2023), with whom he built a blended family that included Janine, Imani, Naomi, Eric, Andre, and Anthony. His love for family continued to grow when he met and married the late Edith Johnson (December 24, 1947 – May 5, 2018) in the mid to late 1970s. Through this union, he became stepfather to Bryon and Michelle. James and Edith shared over four decades of marriage together.
James’s professional journey was as dynamic as his personality. A self-taught truck driver who rose through determination and grit to become a Commercial Grade Tractor-Trailer Driver specializing in construction and delivery work. In 1993, his years of safe and meticulous driving earned him entry in the exclusive "Million Mile Club" for driving over two million miles without accident or incident. He also applied his skills in general construction—both commercial and residential—and worked as a professional painter. His hands built more than structures; they helped to “paint the color of life” and to build a legacy of perseverance and craftsmanship.
Outside of work and family life, James found joy in simple pleasures. He loved telling stories, talking with friends, keeping up with family, playing pool, fishing—often finding peace by the water—and taking long car rides that gave him time to reflect or connect with those riding alongside him.
James is survived by his sisters Ruth Curington and Naomi Norman; and his children Naomi Winbush, Eric Norman, Andre Norman, Anthony Norman; stepchildren Janine Winbush, Imani Marley-Husbands, Bryon Johnson and Michelle Johnson; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry forward his memory.
He was preceded in death by Edith Johnson; Cheryl Murray; Alvina Norman; Kingston Norman; Julius Norman; and Hyleath Norman.
A private ceremony honoring and spreading the ashes of William James "WJ or Big Jim" Norman was held in Petersburg, Virginia.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
