Wilbert Nyenhuis of Oostburg, age 95, passed away peacefully in the afternoon of May 20, 2017 at Pine Haven Christian Communities. He was born on June 25, 1921, the son of John & Pieternella (Dirkse) Nyenhuis.Wilbert enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 21 to serve his country in World War II.He was recognized early on as a skilled mathematician and was trained as a Forward Observer, calculating and directing artillery fire. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in 1946.In 1943 he was united in marriage to Elsie Mentink. They celebrated 72 years of marriage before Elsie's death in 2016.When he returned to Oostburg from the war he worked as a feed specialist for Badger Hatchery. He went on to Milwaukee School of Engineering to learn the trade of plumbing. He worked as a plumber until his retirement. Wilbert served for many years as an elder at Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He felt honored to serve in that capacity and took his role very seriously. He also loved music and enjoyed singing in the church choir, the Men's Chorus, and also sang for countless weddings. A Christ-centered education for his children was very important to Wilbert. He served faithfully on the Oostburg Christian School Board as well as the board of Sheboygan County Christian High School. Wilbert was very generous with his time and talents, volunteering often in his church and children's schools.Wilbert also served on the Pine Haven Board. While on the Board the South Residential Wing at the Giddings Avenue facility became a reality. Wilbert is survived by his children Tom (Sandy) Nyenhuis, Susan (Al) Gross, Jennifer (Brian) Gabrielse; 8 grandchildren and 6 additional grandchildren by marriage; John (Debbie) Nyenhuis, Jason (Stacy) Nyenhuis, Kathryn (James) Cregan, Jessica (Chris) Kolff, Amy Gross, Stephanie (Heath) Clark, Jeff (Chelsea) Gabrielse and Kimberly Gabrielse; 7 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great grandchildren.Wilbert was proceeded in death by his parents John & Pieternella Nyenhuis, son and daughter-in-law Steve & Janet Nyenhuis, 10 siblings and their spouses, and one infant brother.Funeral services will be held at Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 609 Center Avenue, Oostburg, WI on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dave Veldhorst presiding. Family and friends are welcome for the visitation time beginning at 9 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be at Hartman Cemetery.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions would be appreciated for Oostburg Christian Schools and Sheboygan County Christian High School.Dad, your desire for righteous living, loving the Bible, and following the ways of your Lord and Savior were a great example to your children and grandchildren. Thank you for raising us in the knowledge of the scriptures and for also giving your family the love of music.
