Virginia RevelleAge: 87 • BurlingtonVirginia Revelle died peacefully on January 26 at St. Joseph's Home in Burlington. She was born on January 25, 1930 in Hinesburg, VT, the fifth child of Van Berry and Edna Goodrich Berry. She attended Trinity College graduating in 1951 with a degree in history and in that same year, she accepted a position as social studies teacher at Saranac Lake High School in New York. The following year she transferred to The American School, a private boarding school for girls in Lugano, Switzerland. This experience was followed by a short stint in Sasebo, Japan where she taught at a Department of Defense Dependents School for the children of US Service members stationed overseas. Virginia then transferred to a similar institution at the US Air Force Base in Bitburg, Germany, in 1961. She taught Social Studies at Bitburg American High School until her retirement in 1996.It was at Bitburg that Virginia met her future husband of 43 years, Clarence Oliver Revelle of North Carolina, the Bitburg representative of Boston Mutual European Sales. Virginia and Clarence had one son, Joel Winston Revelle of Essen, Germany, who survives them. Many former students and colleagues fondly remember Virginia, whose profound knowledge of American history and politics, combined with her kindness and great sense of humor made her an inspiring teacher. Her annual model US senate sessions in the cafeteria of Bitburg American High School were legendary events.Virginia and Clarence loved classical music and they enjoyed frequent visits to the opera houses of Trier and Luxembourg and to the many gourmet restaurants of the region. Although Virginia spent most of her adult life overseas, she was deeply attached to Vermont and was happy to return to her beloved Burlington upon her retirement, together with her husband, who died in Burlington in 2006.Besides her son, Virginia is survived by her daughter-in-law Isabel Hindersin, by her grandson Julian Revelle, both of Essen, Germany and brother-in-law Richard Detore of Port Saint Lucie, Florida along with dozens of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, by her brothers Wyman and Carroll, and her five sisters Bertha (John Trono), Lucy (Frank Bergjans), Lila (David Kilmer), Kathleen (Bill Haynes), and Johann Detore.Virginia's family extends its gratitude to the staff at St. Joseph's Home for the exceptional care and kindness they showed her; to the many residents whose friendship made Virginia's stay at St. Josephs feel like home; and to Virginia's dear friends Sebastian and Ruth, Janet and Malcolm, Veronica, Joan, and Marie, for their attentive and loving friendships.Virginia Revelle will be interred at Ashley's Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Conway, North Carolina, alongside Clarence. A local service will take place in summer 2017.Arrangements are under the care of LaVigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
