Meli, Vincent D.Vincent David "Tiger" Meli Sr. gently returned home on December 1st. 2016. Beloved father and lifelong resident of Greenwich, he was born on February 11, 1922 to the late Charles and Rose (Mascaro) Meli. Preceded in death by adored wife, Margaret "Peggy" (Moore); a brother Robert F. Meli; and darling grandson Charles A. Meli, Jr. Survived by loving children Charlotte (Roman) Oponski; Vincent D. Meli, Jr., Charles A. (Edith) Meli Sr., and Rose Meli; grandchildren Dylan (Jessica) Meli, Jacob (Melissa) Meli, Alexander (Lauren) Meli, and Brian Meli; sisters-in-law Mary Larson and Ann Sast; special cousin Joan (Mascaro) Iovanna, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as a lifetime of friends. A heroic World War II army Veteran that fought bravely in Battle of the Bulge, retrieving tanks on front lines; he received medals presented by Senator Richard Blumenthal at a special ceremony in 2014 at Parsonage Cottage, which made national news. Vincent was a hard working and proud Teamster of Local 191. Even upon retirement, he never slowed down, working for Neighbor to Neighbor until his later years. As a youth, Vincent was a baseball player that was prospected by major league scouts. A guitar player and lover of music, he instilled love of music to all of his children. His eclectic taste ranged from Leonard Cohen and Phil Ochs to classics including one of his favorites "The Mikado". He had a love for nature and animals. He was proud of his Italian heritage and enjoyed his Irish wife's mastery of Italian cooking; especially her lasagna. "Moby Dick" was his favorite novel (and movie) and he could recite passages from it. He had a wonderful sense of humor and truly had a lot of fun in his full life; as you could learn from his many amusing stories. A memorial gathering will be held will be held on Saturday, December 10th, at 10:00 a.m. with memorial service to follow at 11:00, Leo Gallagher Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich, CT 06830, 203-869-1513.
