Verna Jones, who was born on December 10, 1939, died peacefully in her home on July 21-2025 in Greensboro NC.She was the daughter of Fred Benjamin Sr and Audrey Giles.
Verna was a devoted mother to her children: Mario Craig, Dionne Phillips, Lawana Craig, Yolanda Celestine, Janette Jackson, Claudia Phillips, Darinza Blue, Stacey Charles, and Jannie Robinson She was also a loving grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother.
Verna was the 1st Black Pianist to play at the Claremont Resort and club in Berkeley California. She attended Mcclymonds High School and continued her studies at Laney College in Oakland Ca. where she studied Radio Technology. She was an entrepreneur, innovator who introduced a Transportation Company for the Elderly, Blind and Disabled in Greensboro Nc called Handicab, her concern for others that needed her assistance inspired people to form more services that improved the quality of life, for families in Greensboro. She was a faithful and devoted Jehovah Witness where her passion was field ministry, studying, and sharing scriptures. On June 20, 1973 she was baptized at the North Oakland Kingdom Hall. Verna was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother. She would always say “Families Must Come Together.” to all the five generation of family members who are left to cherish her memory. Verna was affectionately known to all her grand and great grandchildren as Big Granny and GG.and Gigi.
Verna will be remembered for her kind heart, unwavering strength, and selflessness. She touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of compassion and love. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
