Verna Sue Mattlage, known to all as Sue, was born on September 22, 1937, in Sour Lake, Texas, to Robert and Dimple Risinger. Sue lived a life filled with music, faith, family, and a deep love of learning.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Nina Louise Risinger. She is survived by her brother, John Risinger of Kirbyville, Texas; her two sons, Mark Mattlage and David Mattlage; daughter in-laws Kimberly and Crissy along with her cherished granddaughters, Lauren Devine, Madison Williams, MaKenzie Mattlage, Mallari Mattlage, and Meredith Mattlage. Sue was also a devoted great-grandmother to Henry, George, Bradley, and Blair, who brought her immense joy.
Sue earned a degree in Music from the University of Texas, reflecting her lifelong passion for music. She began her career teaching music lessons from her home in Arlington, Texas, and later joined the Arlington Independent School District in 1981, where she served for 30+ years as an educator and mentor to countless students. Sue was also Teacher of the Year for AISD for 1977-1978.
A woman of strong faith, Sue was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church, where she shared her musical talents by playing the organ and piano and singing in the church choir. Her service to the church was a meaningful and enduring part of her life.
Sue had a deep love for her family, especially her granddaughters and great-grandchildren, and treasured the time spent with them. She also loved the beach and devoted countless hours to genealogy, carefully preserving family history for future generations. In addition, Sue was an active member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Colonial Dames XVII Century, and the Daughters of The Republic of Texas reflecting her pride in heritage and history.
Sue will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, musical gifts, and the love she shared so freely with her family and community. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched.
