Shirley Shields-Eley, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2023 in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. She was born on October 11, 1938, to her loving parents, Calvin Straughn Sr. and Audrey Thompson who were both preceded in death.
In 1956, Shirley married the love of her life, Harry Shields (preceded in death), and together they built a beautiful life. They were blessed with six children, who were the joy of their lives. Tyrone Shields (preceded in death), Karen Shields (preceded in death), Michelle Shields (preceded in death), Mark Shields, Pamela Johnson, and Kevin Shields all brought immense pride to Shirley and Harry. Shirley was blessed to find love again, and later married Joseph Eley in 1995. Shirley and Joseph lived a loving life until his death in 2017.
Shirley adored her role as a grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother and leaves behind a legacy of love. She was cherished and admired by her 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Shirley filled her house with music and family every Christmas. She enjoyed listening to her children sing and watching her grandchildren perform dance routines. Family meant everything to Shirley. Their accomplishments, countless laughter and smiles filled her heart with endless happiness.
Shirley was known for her dedication and hard work. She obtained her education at Georgetown High School before embarking on a fulfilling career at the Pentagon before retiring. After retirement, Shirley began a career in the medical field in which she loved bringing joy to her patients. She was also a businesswoman who owned many properties throughout Baltimore City and County. Her commitment and skills left a lasting impact on all those she worked with.
A vibrant soul filled with love for her family and a determination to succeed, Shirley touched the lives of all who knew her. She had an infectious laughter and a smile that could light up any room. Whether it was a family gathering or a community event, Shirley was always the center of attention with her beauty and poise.
Shirley will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her relentless dedication to success, and her direct spirit. Although our hearts ache for her loss, we find comfort in knowing that Shirley's impact will continue to be felt by all those she loved.
