Samuel LeRoy "Roy" FrankelAGE: 90 • Cherry HillSamuel LeRoy "Roy" Frankel, 90, of Cherry Hill, NJ, died peacefully on May 20, 2017, surrounded by his beloved family. Roy was born on April 9, 1927 in Irvington, NJ to Morris and Eva Frankel, and was predeceased by his brother Dover. He is survived by Shirley, his devoted wife of 59 years, daughters Jill (William Ray) and Laurie (Gary Beberman), sons Andy (Nancy) and Allen (Melissa), and his 11 grandchildren Carly, Olivia, Michael, Alexander, Julius, Mollie, Daniel, Sophie, Saylor, Ean and Rikki. Roy had an enormous love of life and his country, first trying to enlist when he was 15. He proudly served in WW II and was a triple veteran of the Marines, Army-Air Corps and Navy. He was on the executive board of the Jewish War Veterans of Cherry Hill, Post 126 After graduating from Weequahic HS in Newark, NJ, he received his B.S. cum laude from Syracuse, M.B.A. magna cum laude from Fairleigh Dickinson, and later took many more courses.Everyone who knew Roy found he had the vibrancy of a man much younger. He loved to dance, ice skate - he played ice hockey in his 50's with men in their 20's-and later took up rollerblading. He had a passion for playing golf up through his 90th birthday. He ran the Philadelphia Marathon at 60; the NY Marathon at 62. He was an unstoppable force, defeating 4 different cancers.Roy started working at age 13 and never quit. During his college years, Roy traveled across the country "hopping" freight trains and working as a lumberjack. Roy worked until 88 in the liquor industry. He joined NJ's first licensed wine & spirits distributor after Prohibition, Galsworthy, Inc., later acquired by Reitman Ind., where he remained dedicated for 60 years. Roy was highly regarded and well respected by his employees, customers, suppliers and industry competitors. Roy had a larger-than-life personality. He was dedicated to and filled with love for his many friends and family. He will be remembered for his loyalty, generosity, sense of humor, sincerity, kindness, positivity, wisdom and warmth. A funeral was held with military honors on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.
