This obituary is administered by:
HERGENROTHER, Ruth B. Ruth Buddington Hergenrother, age 83, passed away at her home in Salt Lake City surrounded by family on Saturday, October 15, 2016. She was born on April 28, 1933 in Washington D.C. to Weston Turner and Ruth Bliss Buddington. Growing up with her two younger brothers, Ruth attended the Newton public schools, graduating from Newton High in June of 1951. She continued her education in the fall of that same year at Oberlin College, and four years later (1955) graduated from Middlebury College with a BA in English. Ruth worked at Massachusetts General Hospital where she met her first husband Robert Todd Schimke. The couple married in 1959, and Ruth became a very busy mother of three children: two step-children and one of her own. Her second child was born three and a half years later. The family moved to Palo Alto, CA when her husband accepted a faculty position at Stanford University. During these busy years Ruth found time to pursue some of her own interests. She loved to garden, cook for guests, and play tennis. On the weekends the family would often travel to the coast or visit museums and art galleries. It was also during this time that Ruth volunteered at the art museum on the Stanford campus. When the children were grown, she began working for the Anesthesiology Department at Stanford University. Ten years later Ruth married again, this time to her childhood sweetheart Karl Hergenrother. Ruth returned to the East Coast to live her life with Karl in Chelmsford, MA. She worked for Arthur D. Little in Boston until her retirement. Ruth loved art in all of its forms. She was a great collector of paintings, sculptures and pottery which she used to decorate her beautiful home. She was an avid reader who enjoyed books from many genre. Her home was full of novels and books about nature, history, cooking and art. Ruth loved to keep up with current events and enjoyed discussing politics and the day's issues with her friends. She had a tremendous appreciation for nature which she loved to photograph. She took countless pictures of flowers, seascapes and other scenes in nature. She especially enjoyed spending time at the beach on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Ruth is survived by her three daughters Caroline Elizabeth Schimke, Cynthia Evans Ames, and Allison Schimke Powers, and her five grandchildren Jillian Elizabeth Ames, Elliott Weston Ames, Devin Charlotte Powers, Tristan Evans Lee, and Jonathan Trumbull Lee. She is also survived by her brother Arthur Bliss Buddington. She was predeceased by her parents and brother Weston Turner Buddington, her husband Karl Hergenrother, and step-son Steven Schimke. Ruth was creative, intelligent, and loving, and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. View the online memorial for Ruth B. HERGENROTHER
