Ronald Dexter Williams Obituary

Jul 30, 1933 - Jan 11, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
WILLIAMSBURG - Ronald Dexter Williams, of Williamsburg, died peacefully on November 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by his father, Dexter Williams; mother, Gladys Sekot; stepfather, Joseph Sekot; brother-in-law, Marshall Slawson; and his sister, Connie Slawson. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Jean Williams; daughters, Ronda Williams, and Shana Turner; five grandchildren, Candace Riley, Douglas Turner, Alex Flores, Haley Turner, and Dillon Turner; and great grandson, Liam Kelly; brother, Dennis Williams; sister-in-law, Gail Williams; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ron's great love of Bluegrass, old Country and "Cowboy" music certainly came from his roots. He was born on July 30, 1933 in Mt. Airy, NC and moved to Galax, VA. Later, his family settled in Norfolk while he was in grade school. After graduating from high school, he started work as a clerk typist at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown. He was drafted into the US Army and was stationed in Korea just after the end of the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to work at the Naval Weapons Station. He worked in Labor Relations Management and retired after 40 years. During his time there he was presented awards for the "Suggestions" program, helped start the NWSF Credit Union, and encouraged his employees using many "Uncle George-isms," like "wiggle in the box" to resolve difficult issues. After his retirement, he became a Freemason, and spent time doing things he loved like continuing to collect LP records, eating in great restaurants, taking photographs, listening to music, and traveling the world. He will be remembered for being a very loving, patient, diplomatic, thoughtful gentleman, and most importantly, one who valued his family. The family will receive visitors from 5 - 7 pm on Thursday, November 17, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23188. A funeral service will be held on November 18, Friday at 10:30am at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185, with a reception to follow. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St, Norfolk, VA 23505 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to the Southeastern Virginia, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.
